Jimmy Dean Horn (Chickasaw b.1988) is a Native American Artist living in Santa Fe New Mexico. His work ranges from printmaking to stained glass and explorations in painting. His subject matter is a mixture of Chickasaw symbolism and western iconography. Growing up in a military family on bases in America shielded him from learning the full extent of his Chickasaw culture. The contrast between his military family and the way of his Chickasaw ancestors are directly opposed and have shaped his views on the world. Through art he is able to express and view both sides through a unique lens.
Within his printmaking Jimmy uses recycled materials or found objects to begin his pieces. He collects wood scraps from construction sites to carve his blocks for printing. His intaglio pieces are typically etched from throw away pieces of plexiglass from local frame shops. If it can be used it should be.
Jimmy’s subject matter uses traditional Chickasaw and Native American symbolism to explore his ancestry which greatly contrasts with his military upbringing. Through his work in various mediums he is inspired by stories of which he has learned. In his works, Jimmy brings together different narratives of complex histories and layers then within his pieces. The imagery he references spans centuries, from current pop culture to pre recorded history. His work in itself becomes a new narrative, and a biographic one. Learning the history of America and his own past through a broader lens bringing it together in a visual medium.
His non-traditional printmaking work has won multiple awards. Jimmy’s work has been shown in Los Angeles CA, Santa Fe NM, Austin TX, OKC OK, NYC NY, Alijo Portugal. This summer he will have a solo show at the Otto Muller Museum in Germany.
